Burnout

The end of the week of final exams. A week when almost every student tries to show what he/she is capable of. Late-night studies, pressured feelings - all of these factors make students one step closer to burnout. Programmers' life is like a constant week of finals. Insomnia, loss of concentration, constant tiredness are some of the first symptoms of upcoming burnout. So, how to prevent yourself from such unwanted subsequences? Let's discuss it now.  Healthy lifestyle. Do you know that your physical health impacts your mental health? Good eating habits, 7+ hours of sleep, physical activity are fundamental points to keep your mind healthy.  Take time for yourself. Every day at least 30 minutes do something that gives you pleasure. Play games, do your favorite hobby, read books - anything that gives the feeling of relaxation and recharges you.  Go outside. Take it as a ritual to go somewhere outside at least once a week. For example, I prefer to meet with friends on the...

Balance in Life (Part I)

Programmers often work with strict deadlines. Night coding, non-stop coding - these terms are familiar to every programmer regardless of level. Furthermore, I am a student - I have to combine my work, studies, and personal life, so that I won't be out of my rhythm because of overwork. Many people ask how I can handle so many tasks: work, university, university social life (I am part of the Students' Union), sport, and personal life. Now, my secret will be relieved.  Obvious, but still productive method to stay on track - make a to-do list. It was very challenging for me to finish all the tasks from my list. I always liked to write to-do lists, but most of the tasks for a day were kept undone. I started blaming myself that it's my problem that I can't handle so much in a day and that's was an issue. I used to write more tasks than I can finish in a day. So, an important point, prioritize your tasks. Don't put all of them in one day. 80/20 rule (Pareto Principl...

Problems of Women in STEM

Изображение
It is rare to see women in STEM professions. You may think that the number of girls involved in STEM raises over time, but  statistics  show the opposite. Although the percentage of women in mathematical and physical sciences remains approximately the same, in computer science the situation is even worse. Why there is such a huge gender gap or what pushes away women in STEM - I will discuss further.  Percentage of women among IT professionals It is a factor that I realized after some time - there is no place for feminine behavior. Since women are mostly surrounded by men, they start to behave in a more masculine way to fit into society. No dresses, no makeup, just jeans and a shirt. It is very uncommon to meet a woman who looks feminine in a society where it is better not to differ from others. Even I feel very uncomfortable if I wear a dress at my work. I already catch a lot of eyes since I am the only girl there, so it is better not to get extra attention by wearing a...

Job Interview

How do you feel before the job interview? Stressed and frustrated or focused and confident? Keep calm if you are one of those who are in the first category, I am with you :) A programmer goes through a lot of interviews - behavioral interviews and further technical interviews. Although after each interview you are one step closer to your aim, stress doesn't go out. Every interview requires special preparations. So, now I will share some tips that I use to get prepared for the interview.  Prepare your questions. Before the interview starts, you can ask some questions regarding company policy and working conditions. By asking questions, you show your interest in the company. However, be serious - don't ask silly questions that can be answered by simple googling.  Research about the company. Your purpose is to find qualities the company values the most. Using this technique, you will be able to show that you suit the most for this position. Regardless of your level in programm...

Hi, I'm Maftuna Ziyamova

Student, programmer, and simply a  human.  I'm a 19-years old girl from Uzbekistan with big dreams and enormous ambitions. I study at Inha University in Tashkent as a Junior student of the Computer Science department.  Coding is my passion.   I started coding about five years ago just by chance. I participated in a Bootcamp for girls who had never had experience in programming before. Surprisingly for me, I became a winner in a final competition. During this Bootcamp, I understood how much I enjoyed the process of creating an application that can solve specific problems. It was the first time I designed something from scratch - project idea, management, implementation. So, I decided that programming is what I want to do now and in the future. As time passes, my passion for programming becomes even stronger.  My career as a programmer began when I was 16. I used to be a front-end developer and got my first paid order. My stack of knowledge increased over years,...
